What Size Belt To Buy – Men’s Clothing Fit Guide

– Hi, I’m Ashley Weston. I’m a celebrity menswear stylist. This video is part of my men’s clothing fit guide. I want to talk to you about how your belt should fit, and what size belt you should buy. I have Tommy here to help me demonstrate what I’m talking about, with regards to belts. So, thanks so much for having me. (laughing) Alright, thanks for being here.

No worries. – So, the belt that I have Tommy in is a dress belt. So, the proper width of a dress belt is you want it to be as close to one and a half inches wide as possible. Which is what what we have here, with Tommy. Any thinner than one and a half inches, it’s going to look like a women’s dress belt. Any wider than one and half inches, it’s going to look really imposing and too large, and it starts to get into the casual belt territory,

which is what you don’t want. With regards to a casual belt, you want it to stay between one and three quarters to two inches wide. Visually, it’s the right proportions for the rest of the outfit. Any thinner, it starts to look off. Any wider than two inches, it starts to look way too large, and is cutting your body off in weird ways. What is the proper length of your belt? It’s really easy.

You should know what your pants size is in terms of your waist. You go one size up for your dress belt, or your casual belt. So, if you are a 32 inch waist, you want a 34 inch belt. That allows for the right amount of excess belt to be showing. I have Tommy in a 34 inch belt, and he’s a 32 inch waist. So, it allows just the right amount of belt to be showing. Anything longer than that, if it’s starting to protrude past your waist, it’s way too long. And also, anything shorter.

If you were to stick with the same waist size belt, so a 32 inch belt, then it’s going to be this puny little amount that’s showing, and it doesn’t look good. Now you know how your belts should fit.
